Interspecies integrity for harmonious living in captivity–24th July 2016

Birds travel a long distances stretching their wings and viewing different scenery while flight in wild. In captivity thought the area of flight cannot be given in terms of distance, change in daily routine and interaction can keep the day interesting for the bird along with healthy and happy being. In captivity inter species acquaintance and interaction can keep them occupied. At Shukavana all birds are given time and space to interact with other species for a friendly acquaintance. It is interesting to note that birds find it interesting to interact with other species but while resting they form species specific groups. Macaws play with lorikeets but during rest hours all lorikeets stay together. A strict observation and intervening duly can build integrity and interspecies communication. In course of time there are many such birds in Shukavana though not of same species are friendly with each other. Observational study made on each group of birds during their flight, play and interactive sessions revealed bird pair up searching their compatible partners in the same species, occasionally one in ten chooses bird in their respective subspecies or genus. Only for interaction and play birds enjoy the company of other species or families like lorikeets, conures, cockatoos, macaws, true parrots etc., since nature had build them to have lot of change in their daily life probably in protected environment in captivity interspecies interaction can help them from avoiding boredom. In a school a child not only interacts and learns from his teacher but also learns a lot from his other friends of same and other sections. Similarly these birds too get entertained with the behaviour, calls and play by interacting with interspecies. Many birds started mimicking like the other birds that is probably learnt to communicate with each other. But a strict monitoring is mandatory since stronger birds can always dominate the recessive ones landing up in fighting. Resources like time for observation, analysis and timely sorting out of issues between birds is very essential. Shukavana is happy to have Sri Swamiji as team leader, observing, personally interacting with birds and guiding all the staff to provide integral and happy harmonious living of feathered friends at Shukavana.
