Mental health or stress of any person or animal are related with their mental status of happiness or sadness. Stress induces hormonal release and likewise happiness. Adrenaline, cortisol and norepinephrine are the 3 major stress hormones released in body to combat the situation. Increased adrenaline is body’s fight-flight response to stress in circumstances of danger, frightening, or highly competitive situation, as well as the feelings of heightened energy, excitement, strength, and alertness. Cortisol is a steroid hormone released during stress and increases blood sugar level by metabolism of fat, protein and carbohydrates. Cortisol prevents the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation there by reducing immunity and bone formation. Norepinephrine is a chemical released from neurons of sympathetic nervous system in response to stress. These stress hormones have effect on vital organs and derailed metabolic activities, hence excessive stress not only effects mental health but also physical health. Stress hormones have a relevant impact on immune system regulation. Prolonged experiences of stress are related to poor individual health.
Five hormones released while a person or animal is happy (anti-stress) are Dopamine, Serotonin, oxytocin, estrogen and progesterone. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter which plays a major role in reward-motivated behavior. It inhibits norepinephrine (stress hormone) release and acts as a vasodilator; in the kidneys, it increases sodium excretion and urine output; in pancreas, it reduces insulin production; in the digestive system, it reduces gastrointestinal motility and protects intestinal mucosa. It reduces the activity of lymphocytes of immune system. It also drives pleasure-seeking behavior. Serotonin is found in animals and plants, it is a mood-boosting neurotransmitter and natural boosted with exercise. It has been implicated in cognition, mood, anxiety and psychosis. Oxytocin is both a neurotransmitter and a hormone and its impact is more on women’s physiology and happiness compared to men’s. Spending time with loved ones and being kind to others stimulates oxytocin. Research says oxytocin produces anti-depressant-like effects in animal models of depression and a deficit of it may be involved in the pathophysiology of depression. Estrogen helps form serotonin and protects from irrita¬bility and anxiety, maintaining one’s mood steady. Progesterone helps to sleep well and prevents anxiety, irritability and mood swings. The estrogen/progesterone imbalance can also negatively affect the mood.
Feather plucking problem in birds, specially Cockatoos is a stress induced behavioral problem. Stress hormones have a relevant impact on immune system regulation, altering inflammatory bio-markers. Music listening has been suggested to be beneficial to physical and mental health by reduction of stress. Music has a unique link to our emotions and many researches support the fact that it is an extremely effective stress management tool that can have a tremendously relaxing effect on minds of humans and animals. Listening to music can lower blood pressure, induce relaxation and reduce anxiety. It also improves the sense of well-being, lifting their spirits and calming their nerves. Music for centuries has been known to have a pleasing appeal to both humans and animals. Music effects ‘Dopaminergic Neurotransmission’. Dopamine is also synthesized in plants and most animals. Increased levels of dopamine in body combats the effects of stress induced hormones and enhances a sense of well being. Music can combat the hormonal effects of stress by increased dopamine release and calming down the bird. Balanced hormonal levels brings in less mood swings and improved mental status.
